The Michel Lyng Motors Senior Football Championship quarter-finals are set to go ahead this weekend as planned with any hopes that Tinryland had of getting the result of Sunday’s draw against Bagenalstown Gaels in the final round of group games overturned now gone.

Video evidence seemed to support their claims that Niall Lowry’s 15th minute shot during the game was incorrectly waved wide. That moment gained huge importance when the game finished level, Tinryland 0-14 Bagenalstown Gaels 1-11, but there seems to be a reluctant acceptance within the club that the result entered by referee Marion Hayden will stand.

Bagenalstown Gaels were already assured of their place in the quarter-finals before the game, barring a sizeable defeat, and it now seems that Fenagh will now move into the knockout stages where they will play Old Leighlin on Sunday.

It leaves Tinryland to face Éire Óg in a relegation final that is a repeat of the county final of just two years ago and it means that one of Carlow’s most established and decorated clubs will be playing in the Intermediate Championship next year.
