AZAP PRINT SENIOR CAMOGIE CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL

MOUNT LEINSTER RANGERS 2-8 MYSHALL 0-6

Mount Leinster Rangers produced a performance for the ages at Netwatch Cullen Park on Saturday in the senior camogie championship final when they out-fought and out-played Myshall who were going for a 26th title in a row. It was a totally convincing performance and the new champions were full value for what was a magnificent victory.

In a tight first half, Rangers led on four occasions as Ciara Kavanagh opened the scoring with a point. Caoimhe Jordan equalised with a free and from there to the half-time whistle the game hung on a knife-edge.

Both sides had goal chances but at the interval, Rangers led 0-4 to 0-3. Three successfully converted frees from Kavanagh had her side believing that this could well be their day.

There was still a mountain of work to be done but when Anna Breen flicked the sliotar to the net at the scoreboard end of the ground it was time to countenance victory.

Myshall kept them honest however and two Ciara Quirke points outlined how dangerous the reigning champions could be. A Kavanagh point from play was the perfect riposte.

It was almost time to dream. The performance was embellished when Rachel Kennedy availed of a bit of space on the edge of the small square as she glided the ball home past a ruck of players. That was it. The stand erupted and the players saw out the concluding stages never letting the focus drop to confirm a first ever senior camogie title for the famous club, completing a hurling double in the club this year after the earlier success of the men.
