Myshall set the standard for others to match

Nobody involved with camogie in Carlow would have minded if the championships were not starting next weekend. When Carlow made their exit from the All-Ireland intermediate championship in the quarter-finals the way was set to hand over to the clubs. A plan was already in place so the move from intercounty to club competition was seamless.

There is a lot to be excited about this year. The senior is a stand-alone competition with Myshall, the 25 year in a row champions determined to hold on to their title. Naomh Bríd would seem to be the most likely side to end that run but Mount Leinster Rangers are nibbling away at them too. The fact that Myshall won the league would suggest they are not going away any time soon.

Only three teams are in the shake up for intermediate honours. Myshall won the league so are entitled to be considered favourites to complete the double.

The junior championship is probably the most intriguing of all. Setanta have big numbers in training and are improving. Kildavin-Clonegal are ambitious. Can they transfer that into wins? St Mullins and Ballinkillen are fielding second teams in this competition which is a new step for them. Stories emanating from the camp that there are a lot of experienced and older players in the two clubs who have either expressed an interest to come back or have been enticed by the powers that be.

The junior is probably harder to predict than the senior. There is no Myshall. Setanta would be hoping to make an impact here. St Mullins, Mount Leinster Rangers and Ballinkillen are all fielding second teams which is proof that the popularity of the game is growing. Kildavin-Clonegal are in there with a chance. It is only after the first two rounds of games have been played that a picture will emerge.
