Éire Óg clubman Joe Murphy added another senior title to his incredible haul today when he led Naas to a third successive Kildare title, their fourth in succession in all.
Murphy led his own club to four Carlow SFC titles in a row and although he fell just short of a five-in-a-row in 2021 he quickly picked up the winning habit again in Kildare and today was another landmark win.
Last year, Naas became the first Kildare club to a three-in-a-row since the 1950s and today became the first to add a fourth since the early 1900s.
It was a day of celebration in Kildare as they officially opened their newly redeveloped St Conleths Park and Carlow County Board Cairman Jim Bolger was one of many guests to enjoy the festivities, along with GAA President Jarlath Burns.
The game was far from a classic but had a thrilling finish as for the second year in a row Naas beat Celbridge by a single point, this time Darragh Kirwan stepping up to kick a 60th minute decider in a 1-7 to 1-6 win.
Murphy and Naas' attention will quickly switch to the Leinster Championship. For three successive years, the only team to beat Naas in Championship action has been the Dublin champions, Kilmacud Crokes on all three occasions. They have been paired with the Dublin winners again this year but this time will have home advantage and the quarter-final against Cuala on Saturday 9 November will be the first game under floodlights at the Newbridge venue.
Carlow Hurling manager Tom Mullally look to complete another double for Naas when he leads the team out in the Kildare Senior Hurling Final at Cedral St Conleths Park next Sunday against Maynooth.
