Éire Óg’s Ben McCarron was in goal as UCD beat Maynooth University on Tuesday evening to qualify for the quarter-finals of the Sigerson Cup.

McCarron was beaten twice but played well overall as UCD recorded a 3-16 to 2-14 win to book their place in the last eight.

His clubmate Jordan Morrissey was the last Carlow man to win the competition back in 2020 with DCU, when beating IT Carlow in the final, but with a side containing many players who were beaten in last year’s final McCarron has a strong chance of emulating that with this excellent UCD team.

McCarron made his Championship debut for Carlow in last year’s Tailteann Cup win away to eventual semi-finalists Fermanagh and played in the opening O’Byrne Cup tie of this year against Offaly, a game where his brother Adam played for Carlow for the first time.
