Intermediate Football Championship Final

Fenagh1-14

Kildavin-Clonegal 1-6

For the second time in three years, Fenagh won the Carlow Intermediate football championship when a superb second-half performance saw them overwhelm Kildavin-Clonegal at Netwatch Cullen Park on Saturday.

The low scoring nature of the first half doesn’t tell the story with both sides going at it from the very start. The game ebbed and flowed with Padraig Hynes firing over a Fenagh point on 10 seconds. After that Jake Nolan scored two points in succession but Fenagh moved into a 0-4 to 0-2 lead at the start of the second quarter.

Kildavin-Clonegal got a huge lift when Niall Hickey’s speculative effort flew off the outstretched hands of Fenagh net-minder, Pat Butler, and ended up in the back of the net. Fenagh hit back and Sean Murphy’s two points left the sides tied at 1-3 to 0-6 at the interval.

The intensity waned a little in the third quarter but Padraig Hynes nailed four frees to put Fenagh into a strong position. They built on it scoring 1-3 without reply to cement the victory. Cormac Lomax scored the goal when a passing movement saw the centre-forward find the net with a shot which crept just inside the left-hand upright.

After that, it was all one-way traffic with Fenagh decisive and deserving winners.
