Dion Wall takes part in Hurling for Cancer
Cancer For Hurling will feature three local Carlow hurlers this year.
The Hurling for Cancer Fundraiser will take place at Netwatch Cullen Park next Monday, August 24th, at 7.30.
Featuring a Jim Bolger versus a Davy Russell selection, three of Carlow's finest ever hurlers will take part this year with Dion Wall (Ballinkillen), James Doyle (St Mullins) and Chris Nolan (Mount Leinster Rangers) all looking forward to being involved.
“I have been in watching it a few times. It is a great event. I was in last year. It is good to mix with other sports people and people who you wouldn’t be usually talking to,” said Dion.
Last year, the event raised €215,690 for the Irish Cancer Society and the Ballinkillen man is delighted to be involved again this year.
“When I was asked to take part this year, I wasn’t going to turn it down.
"It brings a lot of people together and attracts sports people from afar. You can see what it means to people. Big crowds go to it and sports people from all over Ireland get involved and come to play. It is a big thing,” the Carlow senior hurler added.
In 2025 a member of his own family, having lived with cancer for many years, passed away.
“My grandmother, when I was small, had it and was lucky to beat it two or three times. I know every family is touched with it in some way either directly or indirectly. It is important to keep this charity event going,” stressed Dion.
The Ballinkillen man says the match also brings together sports people who wouldn’t normally get to meet each other.
“I wouldn’t be into horses but last year I was sitting beside Davy Russell and we got chatting about hurling. You would spark up a conversation through hurling initially and it is a nice way to meet people.”
Tickets cost €10 for adults and €5 for children and are available to purchase on www.hurlingforcancer.ie Visit the Hurling for Cancer Research website to register or find out more.
