Shane Curran has been ratified as the new Carlow senior football team manager. At a County Board meeting, which was held in the offices of Netwatch Cullen Park on Wednesday, the former Roscommon senior footballer was proposed, seconded and his nomination was unanimously supported by club delegates.

After his appointment had been confirmed the new manager was on hand to address the meeting.

“Thank you for placing your trust in me. It is a huge honour. I am looking forward to bringing energy and positivity to the job,” he said.

“Any county can perform if they play with ambition to go with a mission.” He confirmed that he had spoken with previous managers, Niall Carew and Turlough O’Brien, while he is still setting up his backroom team.

He appealed to delegates and all Carlow people to get behind the county.

“I will give you 1000% to ensure you guys have as much success as humanly possible and I look forward to getting to know people in the community.” Curran fielded a number of questions from the floor with Jimmy Barcoe of the Carlow Town Hurling Club asking about the role of the dual player.

The new man pointed out that the role of the dual players was becoming more difficult with heavier work-loads expected of them but he did say he would be as accommodating as possible.

In response to another question about releasing players back to the club, Curran confirmed that after the matchday squad of 25-26 names had been announced, he would definitely release other squad members back to play with their respective clubs.

“It is crucial all players get a chance to play whether it be with club or with the county,” Curran confirmed, who also told delegates he would be a familiar face over the coming weeks in Netwatch Cullen Park as the football championships reaches the knock-out stages.
