Carlow Town return to Camogie Championship with a bang
Carlow Town made a winning return to adult Camogie Championship action
Fielding an adult camogie team for the first time since 1991, Carlow Town made the journey to Ballinkillen for their first adult championship outing in more than three decades and marked the occasion with a memorable victory.
Showing no signs of nerves despite the historic significance of the day, the visitors made a bright start and raced into an early 0-3 to 0-0 lead. Ballinkillen gradually settled into the contest and worked their way back into the game, but Carlow Town maintained the upper hand throughout the opening half.
The pivotal score of the half arrived when a long-range free from Shauna Sweeney caused problems in the Ballinkillen defence before ending up in the net. The goal helped Carlow Town establish a 1-5 to 0-3 advantage at the interval.
Ballinkillen battled gamely throughout the second half and enjoyed periods of pressure, but the Carlow Town defence stood firm and denied the hosts the goal they needed to close the gap.
The decisive moment arrived when Brónagh Myers latched onto her opportunity and rifled the sliothar to the Ballinkillen net, putting the result beyond doubt and sealing a historic championship victory for the returning Town side.
For Carlow Town, it was a day that will live long in the memory, as their long-awaited return to adult championship camogie ended with a deserved and landmark success.
