Not since St Fortcherns in 2007 has a team brought a Leinster LGFA Intermediate title back to Carlow but that drought is over after a magnificent win by Bennekerry/Tinryland against Meath’s Dee Rangers in Kinnegad today.
A first half penalty by Clíodhna Ní Shé was the difference at half time with Bennekerry/Tinryland ahead by 1-6.
Dee Rangers battled back to get within a point but as often been the case for Bennekerry/Tinryland in recent months, the introduction of the brilliant Lauren Dwyer gave them a shot in the arm when needed.
She scored the second goal in the 43rd minute to make it 2-8 to 0-9. Sinead Hayden picked her our with a low pass but there was still lots for Dwyer to do after the gathering the ball. She turned on a six pence to beat her marker and then found the bottom right hand corner of the net for a lovely finish. In all, Dwyer finished with 1-2 after coming into the game at half time.
Dwyer wasn’t the only star player for Bennekerry/Tinryland, indeed, it was an outstanding team display. Leah Mullins was named as player of the match after an outstanding display, while Ní Shé must have featured prominently in thoughts of those picking that award after scoring 1-5.

Dwyer turned provider injury time as Bennekerry/Tinryland put the cherry on their when she intercepted a kick out and fed the ball inside to Maeve O’Neill who gleefully fired low into the corner of the net to complete a famous win.
