David Walsh, Chairperson of The Beatrice Pembroke Walsh Foundation, was presented with €2,140 last week by Ger McNally and Sue O’Neill from The Nationalist. The money was raised by a raffle held during this year’s Nationalist Sports Awards in The Woodford Dolmen Hotel Friday on Friday 23rd January 2026.
The Beatrice Pembroke Walsh Foundation is a registered charity dedicated to raising awareness of the rare cancer Leiomyosarcoma (LMS). The foundation was the brainchild of David’s wife, Beatrice, who sadly passed away in October 2022 after a courageous battle with LMS. It was Beatrice’s final wish that no other woman would have to endure the uncertainty she faced, often left in the dark without answers.
The foundation is committed to increasing awareness to support earlier diagnosis and to funding vital research, with the hope that one day a cure will be found. Because of the lack of awareness around LMS, people are often misdiagnosed, or their illness has advanced by the time they are correctly diagnosed. Life expectancy is far better when LMS is detected early in its primary source. The Beatrice Pembroke Walsh Foundation is the only Leiomyosarcoma (LMS) focused Foundation of its kind in Ireland.
Mr. Walsh commented that he was delighted to receive the donation, noting that local events such as The Nationalist Sports Awards play an important role in bringing visibility to lesser-known conditions like LMS, and he also added that the Foundation extends its sincere thanks to everyone who contributed on the night.
