A LOCAL dancing school has been celebrating its incredible achievements on the world stage.
Members of the Kirwan Academy of Irish Dance gathered in Tullow’s Mount Wolseley Hotel recently to pay tribute to its under-12 céilí team, which claimed a world title earlier this year. The team, comprised of dancers from classes across Co Carlow, was victorious at Killarney’s INEC in March.

Principal Emily Kirwan told
: “The team is comprised of girls from Myshall, Rathoe, Clonegal, Tullow and Athy. They started to work together last September and to win the world championships is a huge deal for them and their parents.” Emily says the work ethic of her dancers is “second to none”. “All these dancers show up, wanting to do the very best for their team. It is hugely rewarding to work week-in week-out with the dancers and to see everything that comes along with it – the injuries, the pain, the sore feet, the worry – it’s the icing on the cake when you can get that elite title,” she said.
The school also had success at U10 level with the fairy reel coming sixth, the U14 ceilí team placed second and the U14 invention team finished fourth at the annual World Irish Dancing Championships. Laura Evans placed eighth for her U12 solo in a category with more than 140 other dancers.

Emily extended a special thanks to sponsor Joe O’Toole and to local cllr Ben Ward, who presented the girls on the night and to teachers Amey Bermingham and Lisa Murray.
