IT OPENED amid much fanfare five years ago but this week JD Wetherspoon on Tullow Street, Carlow has announced it is to “cease trading” this August.
The Tullow Gate announced that its pub and restaurant will be closing its doors this summer, a huge blow to its staff and to Carlow town centre.
“We can confirm that The Tullow Gate will cease trading as a Wetherspoon pub on 18 August,” explained Wetherspoon spokesperson Eddie Gershon this week.
“Staff have been made aware of the decision and Wetherspoon will be complying with its legal obligations to consult with staff,” he concluded.
Just over €3 million was spent in developing the outlet. There was much excitement about the opening of the pub in Carlow, which prides itself of its low prices.
Tullow Gate opened its doors in May 2019, employing over 60 staff. It was the sixth Wetherspoon to open its doors in the Republic of Ireland and the first outside of Dublin and Cork.
