Star Carlow students recognised at prestigious awards ceremony

THE sense of pride was almost palpable when five young people from across the county were honoured for their outstanding contributions to their respective schools at the KCETB student of the year awards.

The awards ceremony took place in the Woodford Dolmen Hotel, Carlow recently when the teenagers who have just finished their secondary school education were selected for their outstanding contributions to school society, both personally and academically.

Five students from Co Carlow were presented with silver medals in recognition of their stellar school careers. On the podium were Sophie Maher from Borris College, Jake Ayres from Tyndall College and Faith Nic Aogáin, Gaelcholáiste Cheatharlach, both in Carlow town; Joseph Hickey from Coláiste Aindriú, Bagenalstown; and Mark Kinsella from Coláiste Eoin, Hacketstown.

The awards recognise skills and talents; dedication and determination; academic achievements; extra-curricular activities; generosity of spirit; kindness to others; willingness to take an active part in school life; and the student’s capacity to make a difference to their school community.

Dr Pauline Egan, director of schools at KCETB, said at the awards ceremony: “This celebration has recognised all that you have achieved. You have already accomplished so much through your hard work, resilience, talent and commitment and you should be incredibly proud of yourselves. But as impressive as your achievements are, they are only the beginning. Each of you has unique gifts, ambitions and potential and we have no doubt that you will continue to achieve great things as you make your way in the world. Wherever life takes you next, carry with you the confidence to embrace opportunities, the courage to face challenges and the belief that you can make a real difference.” As chairperson of the KCETB board, cllr Andrea Dalton presented each student with their medal, while closing the evening was KCETB chief executive Dr Lindsay Malone. She congratulated each of the students on their remarkable achievements and encouraged them to take chances in life, saying that they will have many choices to make in their lifetime, but through chances life happens.
