Rock-throwing youths smash window on cross-town bus

A bus in Carlow town was vandalised

ONE of the vehicles in Carlow town’s bus fleet came under attack last week when a stone smashed its rear window on the CW2 route. Coincidentally, this comes just days after Bus Éireann celebrated the first anniversary of its hugely successful local service.

Reports on social media suggest that a group of youths in the vicinity of the post office were firing stones at the bus. A spokesperson for Bus Éireann told The Nationalist that the bus was operating as normal on the CW2 route between the Wexford Road Business Park and Barrow Valley Retail Park on Friday 26 July, when a stone struck a window at the back of the bus.

No passengers were on board at the time of the incident and no-one was injured. The driver informed the local control centre and returned with the bus for inspection. It is hoped that the vehicle, which was taken out of service while the window is repaired, will be operational as soon as possible.

Mayor Fintan Phelan expressed his disappointment, telling The Nationalist the service has been a huge success.

“I was disappointed to learn of this incident. It is completely unacceptable that someone would throw stones at our bus, endangering road users, passengers and pedestrians. The buses are fitted with CCTV and there is also garda CCTV in our town. Anti-social behaviour will not be accepted and a very small minority will not be allowed to damage our valuable bus service.” Bus Éireann says the safety of passengers and staff is of paramount importance and any incidents reported are taken very seriously and are fully investigated. Customers can report any incidents to gardaí, to the driver or to our customer care team on 0818 836611 or via customercare@buseireann.ie
