Residents anger over Swastika

Swastikas on a wall in the Athy estate

YOUNGSTERS are allegedly behind malevolent graffiti in an Athy estate last week.

According to a member of the residents association committee, the graffiti – which included swastikas – appeared in the estate on Wednesday and was apparently done in broad daylight.

“Had they picked up a history book, they'd know how to draw it (the swastika) properly. But that aside, they'd know what it represents and they might think twice before doing it.”

Photos show ‘Irish only’ daubed on one wall, while ‘IRA’ was painted on another wall and partially obscuring a sign urging drivers to slow down and be aware of children playing.

Some trees were broken and the name plaque at the entrance to the estate was defaced with what appeared to be black paint.

The committee member, who said they know who did it, described the estate as very inclusive.

“The committee is extremely annoyed, angry and want to impress the point that it's an inclusive estate, everybody's welcome and most people are contributing to the estate,” they said.

The  Nationalist was subsequently informed that last Friday night (16 August), house and car windows were smashed.

An Garda Síochána has been contacted for comment.
