Public meeting tonight in support of Carlow College staff
A meeting has been called about the closure of Carlow College
A PUBLIC meeting has been organised in support of the 87 workers in Carlow College who were recently told they are to be made redundant. The shock announcement was made last month when the college announced that it would remain open for just two more years after a proposed merger with South East Technological University (SETU) fell through.
Cllr Adrienne Wallace, a former student of Carlow College, said: “After much shock and dismay following the recent news, I am hoping that people in Carlow will now rally around the workers in Carlow College who have given so much to our community over the years. The workers are obviously at the forefront of any fight for better terms and conditions, but as a community we can show them that they are not alone.”
She added: “People can sign a petition on the night in support of staff, but it will also send a message to the Department of Higher Education and local government TDs that these workers deserve better than forced redundancy.”
The meeting takes place in the Seven Oaks Hotel, Carlow at 7.30pm on Friday 12 June. Cllr Wallace will chair the event and speakers will include Sinn Féin TD Natasha Newsom-Drennan and others.
