A BAGENALSTOWN-based developer, MESD Ventures Limited, has submitted plans to turn vacant office space above 38, 39, 40 and 43 Tullow Street into student accommodation. The student accommodation will be located above Dealz and the Citizens’ Information Centre.

The applicant has sought permission to build 11 one-bed student accommodation units with communal areas consisting of a laundry room, a general/bike storage room, refuse storage area and ancillary services. It is presumed that the bedrooms will be en-suite.

38-43 Tullow Street is still listed as available on Daft.ie to rent as commercial space at a cost of €65,000 a year. Maher Property Associates is listed as the property’s letting agent.

The property’s description reads: ‘First floor commercial space available to let in an eye-catching building located on Carlow's main thoroughfare. Overlooking the town library, this unique unit is accessible through double doors from the pedestrian walkway between Tullow Street and Carlow Shopping Centre. There is also an emergency exit located to the rear of the building.

‘The property comes to the market in shell and core condition, with floor to ceiling windows, and would need investment by a new tenant. The property would suit a variety of uses. Flexible lease terms available with rent-free period given in lieu of fit-out. Division of the unit would be considered.

The Nationalist has previously reported on how Carlow’s student accommodation crisis has forced some students at SETU to resort to sleeping in their cars because of the difficulty and expense of obtaining accommodation in Carlow.
