Night ban for cars in cemetery following anti-social behaviour

St Mary's Cemetery in Carlow

A DECISION has been taken to close St Mary’s Cemetery, Carlow to cars at night following concerns about anti-social behaviour. Carlow County Council last week stated that from Monday 25 November, “St Mary’s Cemetery, Carlow town will be closed to all vehicular traffic from 8pm to 8am each day”.

The council pointed out that “pedestrian access to St Mary’s Cemetery will continue to be maintained at all times”.

In recent weeks, there have been strong calls to close the cemetery at night in an effort to curb the ongoing issues of late-night revelry at the cemetery.

The Nationalist recently carried a front-page story reflecting the anger and disgust people felt seeing fireworks being set off, the consumption of alcohol and loud music in the cemetery at Halloween.

Carlow gardaí have also appealed to the public to report all incidents of anti-social behaviour they encounter at the cemetery.
