O'Callaghan says no report made to gardaí of assault on NFL player

Minister for Justice Jim O'Callaghan has said there was no report of an assault on an NFL player in Dublin made to gardaí.

It comes after reports that Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Skylar Thompson suffered minor injuries in a mugging on Friday night in the country's capital.

A spokesperson for the team said they are working to gather further details about the alleged incident.

Speaking on Newstalk, O'Callaghan said most people still feel safe in the capital.

"No complaint has been made to An Garda Síochána in respect of that alleged criminal offence," he said.

"So I'm not absolutely certain that this is the type of attack on a tourist that we've had to engage in and respond to.

"Isn't the point that I have been mentioning repeatedly is Dublin is a city and county of 1.2/1.3 million people. We're always going to have incidents there."

Thompson was already on the reserve panel for the NFL game in Croke Park on Sunday after suffering a hamstring injury earlier this month.

The Pittsburgh Steelers went on to win the match, cheered on by over 74,500 fans.
