Jessie Buckley has been nominated for an Oscar.

The Kerry native has been nominated in the Best Actress category for her performance in Hamnet.

She goes up against Rose Byrne for If I Had Legs I’d Kick You, Kate Hudson for Song Sung Blue, Emma Stone for Bugonia and Renate Reinsve for Sentimental Value.

Buckley is widely considered the frontrunner, having already secured a string of trophies, including the Golden Globe and Critics’ Choice award.

While her co-star Paul Mescal missed out on a nod in the Best Supporting Actor category, the film is nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay, Costume Design, and Casting.

In the best picture category, Hamnet goes up against Bugonia, F1, Frankenstein, Sentimental Value, Sinners, Train Dreams, Marty Supreme, One Battle After Another and The Secret Agent.

Hamnet received eight nominations overall, including one for Maggie O'Farrell and director Chloé Zhao for adapted screenplay.

Dubliner Richard Baneham is up for his third Oscar in the visual effects category in the recently released Avatar: Fire and Ash.

John Kelly and Andrew Freedman were nominated in the animated short film category for Retirement Plan. The film was commissioned by Screen Ireland and RTÉ and features the vocals of Domhnall Gleeson.

Jesse Plemons was tipped to be nominated for best actor for Bugonia, made by Ireland’s Element Pictures. He lost out, but star Emma Stone made the best actress cut, while Element’s Ed Guiney and Andrew Lowe were nominated as Bugonia made the best picture list.

Ryan Coogler's supernatural thriller Sinners smashed the record held by All About Eve, Titanic and La La Land for the most nominations, getting 16 in total, two more than the previous record of 14.

British-Nigerian star Wunmi Mosaku was nominated for the best supporting actor Oscar for her performance in the vampire drama.

She will compete against Elle Fanning and Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas for Sentimental Value, Amy Madigan for Weapons and Teyana Taylor for One Battle After Another.

Paul Thomas Anderson’s film One Battle After Another picked up 13 nominations and remains a key frontrunner for best picture on the night, and Marty Supreme, Sentimental Value and Frankenstein got nine nominations each.

The nominations were announced by actors Danielle Brooks and Lewis Pullman in Beverly Hills via a livestream.

The Academy Awards will be hosted by Conan O’Brien in Hollywood on March 15th.
