MYSHALL is preparing to honour world ploughing champion Eamonn Treacy, following his recent victory at the World Ploughing Championships in Estonia.

His victory in the conventional class was the third consecutive win for the local ploughman, a feat that hasn’t been achieved since the 1950s, earning him a place in the history books. This year’s title is Eamonn’s sixth since 2014.

The Irish team, who were crowned Supreme Champions at the event, were greeted to much fanfare at Dublin airport upon their return last week, something it is hoped will be emulated locally this week.

A homecoming ceremony will be held on the Main Street in Myshall at 6pm on Sunday, with refreshments served afterwards in Roberts’ Bar and Lounge. Organisers Carlow Ploughing are asking everyone to come along to “show your support to our world champion to mark this great achievement”.

Eamonn travelled to west Cork over the weekend, where a massive crowd attended the homecoming of Jer Coakley, who secured the county’s first world title when he won the Reversible Ploughing category. The Carlow flag, along with the red and white of Cork, flanked the Irish tricolour preceding the ploughmen, who were driven through Clonakilty’s streets in a vintage blue Rolls-Royce. The world champions were then hoisted onto shoulders to rapturous applause.
