STAFF at a Carlow shop had a terrifying ordeal this week when a man armed with a knife tried to steal money from the premises.

At around 12.30pm on Wednesday, a hooded male, described as being six foot tall and of stocky build, entered the Daybreak shop on Athy Road in the town. The man, who was also wearing sunglasses, approached the counter and placed a piece of paper, which was a demand for money, onto the counter. He did not speak, but produced a knife. The tills were not open and he left the store empty-handed, fleeing on e-scooter through the grounds of St Dympna’s Hospital and then past Carlow train station.

Nothing was taken in the incident and there were no injuries, but staff were left shaken by the ordeal. A garda investigation is ongoing and Superintendent Anthony Farrell has appealed for witnesses around the Athy Road, the Old Dublin Road and Station Road, as well as those on the grounds of St Dympna’s Hospital at lunch time to come forward.

“People may have valuable information. If you can help in any way with the investigation of this crime, please get in touch,” he said.

Carlow Garda Station can be contacted on 059 9136620.
