CIRCLE K has lodged plans with Carlow County Council for a major electric vehicle charging hub at its Rathcrogue service station off Junction 5 of the M9 motorway.
The planning application, submitted on 15 September, seeks permission for a high-power charging facility featuring 18 electric vehicle charging bays served by nine charging points.
The development would see significant changes to the existing site, including the installation of a new canopy with illuminated signage, a new modular ESB substation, and EV banner signage. Plans also include a signature wall and revisions to the existing landscaped area.
To accommodate the new facility, existing trees, vegetation and lighting columns would be removed. The works also include new road markings, drainage and other associated site development.
The Rathcrogue service station currently has three 100kW EV chargers on site and houses a McDonald’s alongside other fast food outlets in its food court.
The planned expansion would significantly increase EV charging capacity in the area. Of the six Circle K stations across County Carlow, the Rathcrogue location is currently the only one equipped with EV charging facilities.
The application is now with Carlow County Council for consideration.
