Landlords accused of  ‘taking the mick’ on basic living standards

Landlords

SOME local landlords are “taking the mick” and not complying with basic standards in the properties they are renting out.

Cllr Adrienne Wallace was referring to a council report that indicated 48 landlords were deemed not to be compliant in the standard of accommodation they are providing.

“That is an absolutely shocking level,” cllr Wallace stated, adding that children were living in these conditions, including properties with “black mould”, leaving them suffering with chest infections that required the doctor and in some cases hospital attention.

“These landlords are taking the mick,” she argued.

Chief executive Coilín O’Reilly clarified that that 42 non-compliant rental properties were inspected, which came as a result of complaints made and were not random inspections of Carlow properties.

Mr O’Reilly stated that 52 complaints were received by the local authority and of those, 48 properties were deemed to be non-compliant.
