Heavens above: the world of Carlow saints

CARLOW library was the venue for a recent talk about the numerous saints that are associated with Co Carlow titled . The talk was given jointly by Caroline Busher, who is an author and the current writer in residence at Carlow library, and Christopher Power, senior assistant librarian.
“There’s quite a few saints associated with Carlow and we know very little about them,” Christopher said.
During the talk, Caroline and Christopher explained what is known about the lives of the saints and the places in Co Carlow that they are associated with and the traditions linked with each saint.
“Places like Aghade Church, which is a very pretty church, and Craughvane Well, near Kildavin,” Christopher said.
Caroline also spoke about a number of holy wells and their histories. Caroline and Christopher had photos of the different sites to accompany the talk.
“Saints like St Finian and St Aidan, who is associated with Clonmore; others like St Failghe, whom we know very little about, but they all seem to have travelled a lot around the county and to places like Iona and into the UK to St David’s in south Wales, for instance,” Christopher explained.
After Christopher and Caroline had spoken, there was a lively crowd discussion and some members of the audience had knowledge about the lives of various Carlow saints.
Having previously given a similar talk about Wexford saints, Christopher and Caroline hope to give more talks like this in the future in venues around Co Carlow because they believe there is a demand for such knowledge.
