A NEW Lidl on Castlecomer Road, Graiguecullen is expected to open in the summer after the resolution of a years-long planning dispute.

First plans for the site of the former National Learning Network Centre released in June 2024 drew several submissions from residents in the area. Fr John Dunphy of St Clare’s Church argued that the development would cause traffic congestion and have “adverse effect” on the church, the parish welfare home St Fiacc’s House and St Fiacc’s National School.

Homeowners argued that the development would cause noise pollution and interfere with the enjoyment of their properties.

The council requested extra information from Lidl Ireland in August 2024 and representatives met concerned people in the locality. The company made small adjustments to the design of the supermarket, but the residents remained steadfast in their objection to the development.

Carlow Co Council granted permission for the fourth Lidl in Co Carlow in June 2025. This decision was appealed to An Comisiún Pleanála by two residents in July 2025. Shortly after this, the appeal was withdrawn.

An update on the construction works by SDS design engineers through their Facebook page earlier in said that the precast columns have been installed and the floor slab is ready to be poured.
