Duo’s first single is a timely retort to a changing Ireland

The Mercadonnas are Jack O'Flaherty and Mark Wogan from Carlow town
CARLOW-BASED combo The Mercadonnas have just released their debut single Céad Míle Fáilte.
The band, comprised of Jack O’Flaherty and Mark Wogan, was formed earlier this year, with their debut single released last week.
The song is a powerful introduction to the band’s sound – a mix of reverb-soaked guitars, driving basslines and cavernous drums, all underscored by Jack’s raw, emotive vocals.
"I wrote this song wondering about who we are and how that's changing," said Jack.
"Historically, Irish people know what it is to be a refugee, a migrant. The Irish diaspora is proof of that. Maybe that's why we pride ourselves so much on the Irish welcome 'céad míle fáilte' and all that. We give visitors here the welcome that we wish our grandfathers, uncles and grannies had when they had to go abroad. I hope that never changes."
The single is punky and raw and isn’t a hundred miles away from the sound of Fontaines DC or the sweeping sound of Future Islands.
The band’s sound, described by Jack as "abrasive music for abrasive times", is a reflection of their sharp social insight, signature humour and undeniable pop hooks.
