AN GARDA Síochána mounted a massive road safety operation over the bank holiday weekend in a bid to stop motorists from speeding.
On Friday alone, almost 85,000 vehicles were checked, with one car being detected travelling at 141kph in an 80kph zone on the N80 at Tullow.
Chief Superintendent Jane Humphries of the Garda National Roads Policing Bureau said: "Anyone that is prepared to drive at dangerously excessive speeds like those we've already detected has the potential to destroy lives — if not their own, then others, too.
Speeding is one of the foremost dangerous driving behaviours, along with using your phone while driving and being distracted. Please slow down and drive safely."
