Dr Cullen Roundabout gets major facelift for Entente Florale Europe
The new sculptures reflect sporting life in County Carlow
DOCTOR Cullen Roundabout in Carlow town is the latest junction to get a facelift from Carlow County Council landscaping team, just in time for the Entente Florale Europe awards ceremony at the weekend.
Dotted around the green are sculptural figures of men and women playing a variety of sports, including Gaelic football, camogie, hurling and rugby.
The sporting theme reflects the junction's location beside Netwatch Dr Cullen Park, O'Hanrahan's GAA club, Carlow Town Hurling club, Carlow Rugby club and Carlow Lawn Tennis club.
The local authority told that the installation was inspired by the third sustainable development goal, which focuses on good health and wellbeing and celebrates the important role that sport, physical activity and active lifestyles play in building healthy, connected and vibrant communities. The design of Dr Cullen roundabout now ‘reflects local sporting participation and community wellbeing,’ it said.
The roundabout was developed in partnership with contractor Rigars Plant Hire Limited, which was appointed through the standard public procurement process in early 2026.
The council and contractor began planning and designing the roundabout in August 2025 and landscaping works began in June. The council said the sculptural element of the project cost €33,636.
‘The enhancement complements other public realm investments throughout the town, including the nearby Ceatharlach sculpture, and contributes to creating attractive and welcoming public spaces for residents and visitors alike,’ the statement read.
Cllr Fintan Phelan said the roundabout was "a great addition to the town" and that it "really enhances the area".
Entente Florale is a Europe-wide competition designed for cities, towns and villages that prioritise green spaces, livability, sustainability and community spirit. Carlow won a gold medal when it previously hosted the competition in 2024.
The council has been sprucing up flowerbeds for weeks preparing for the ceremony which takes place on Saturday.
