Derek plays for the president

CARLOW-born country music star Derek Ryan recently delivered a memorable performance at the president’s official residence, entertaining guests at Michael D Higgins’s annual garden party.
The 41-year-old singer, originally from Garryhill, was invited as a guest of President Higgins and his wife Sabina to perform at Áras an Uachtaráin. This year’s garden party celebrated Ireland’s vibrant country and Irish music scene, with Derek taking centre stage before an audience of fellow musicians and invited guests.
The performance proved particularly engaging, with Sabina Higgins notably joining in by dancing during the seated concert. Ryan’s set clearly resonated with the distinguished audience gathered for the special occasion.
This marks another significant milestone for the singer, who has performed everywhere, from village halls and school gymnasiums to packed arenas throughout his career. However, this presidential performance holds special significance as recognition of Irish country music’s important role in the nation’s cultural and social fabric.
The garden party appearance wasn’t Ryan’s first encounter with the president. He has previously performed at the National Ploughing Championships, where President Higgins regularly appears as part of the official opening ceremony.
Speaking about the occasion, Ryan described it as “a truly memorable experience” and expressed his honour at being invited to such a special event. The performance held additional meaning as his father Pat attended alongside him.
Ryan began his musical journey as a member of the pop boyband D-Side from 2001 to 2006, achieving UK and Irish top 10 hits before transitioning to country music. Since going solo, he has released over a dozen albums and established himself as a prominent figure in Irish country music, with several releases reaching the top of the Irish album charts.
