Glowing in the dark at the SETU summer camp

MORE than 100 children from Carlow, Kilkenny and Laois were welcomed to SETU’s Carlow campus recently for an action-packed summer camp.

Children had the opportunity to make new friends while developing new skills and unleashing their creativity, all while staying fit. A highlight was a trip to the world-class South Sports Campus for the ‘Olympics’ event, where children competed for gold medals in fun events like the potato and spoon race, sack race, beanbag throw and shoe race, all on the impressive 400m track. Adding to the excitement, this year’s camp featured a glow soccer activity, incorporating UV paint, tape and lights to create a thrilling glow-in-the-dark environment.

Expressing her joy at the camp’s success, organiser Paula Hickey said: “We were delighted to be able to host another successful year of summer activity camps. Our community outreach work is extremely important to us here in the sports department and it is really rewarding to see so many happy faces at the end of each day. The children got the opportunity to try new activities in a fun environment while meeting new people and making lifelong friends.” The camp offered a daily programme packed with indoor and outdoor activities, including arts and crafts, athletics, badminton, basketball, computing, Gaelic football, orienteering, rounders, soccer, swimming, tag rugby, table tennis, fun games, and uni-hockey, as well as a swimming trip to Portlaoise Leisure Centre, followed by a picnic and plenty of fun in the park.

Plans are already in motion for next year, with Paula thanking SETU staff and students for their dedication in ensuring an enjoyable experience for everyone.
