AN UNACCOMPANIED learner driver who crashed his car into a ditch in the early hours of the morning has been fined €200.

Shane Edward O’Neill (27) Ballymartin, Borris was not present before Judge Andrew Gubbins at Carlow District Court when his case was called. His solicitor Joe Farrell said he had received an email from his client asking him to enter a guilty plea on his behalf.

The court heard that at 3.10am on 11 January, gardaí attended the scene of a single vehicle road traffic collision in Carlow where Mr O’Neill had crashed his car into a ditch.

A garda spoke to him at the scene and found that he was a learner driver driving unaccompanied and with no L plate displayed.

A fixed charge notice was issued but went unpaid. Mr O’Neill has no previous convictions.

“More significant matters arose from that night,” Mr Farrell told the court. “He’s not ignoring this offence and is asking to apologise to the court.” Judge Gubbins convicted Mr O’Neill and fined him €200 for driving unaccompanied.
