A 31-YEAR-old man who threatened someone with a hammer two years ago pleaded guilty at a recent sitting of Carlow District Court before Judge Eugene O’Kelly.

Martin Lyons, 46 Springfield Park, Burrin Road, Carlow pleaded guilty to an offence under section 3 of the Criminal Damage Act for threatening to damage a person’s home in Rathvinden, Carlow on 16 March 2024.

He further pleaded guilty to possessing an article of intent, namely a hammer, on the same day, which is an offence under section 9(5) of the Firearms and Offensive Weapons Act, 1990.

His defence barrister noted that Mr Lyons was on remand in respect of the matter and explained that he was “in the throes of addiction” at the time he committed the offences. However, she noted that he was now addressing these issues and “in light of a marked change in personal circumstances”, she asked the court to adjourn the sentencing hearing until later in the year.

Judge O’Kelly noted “there are victims in this case” and felt it was “inappropriate to go beyond next term” for sentencing. He put the case back for mention on 14 July and directed a probation report to be compiled on the defendant.
