Sentenced for having a knife while drunk

The man was jailed for six months

A CARLOW man who pleaded guilty to having a knife outside a pub while he was drunk was given a custodial sentence last week when he appeared before Judge Geraldine Carthy in the local district court.

Before sentencing Seamus Reddy to six months’ imprisonment, Judge Carthy noted that he was intoxicated when he had the knife and that he would have “destroyed lives” if he had used it.

Mr Reddy, St Martin’s, Tullow Road, Carlow pleaded guilty to possessing the knife and to being intoxicated in a public place at The Salt Bar, Tullow Street, Carlow on 7 September.

Defending solicitor John O’Sullivan told the court that Mr Reddy’s friend had died in tragic circumstances around that time and that he had struggled himself with his mental health.

When Judge Carthy asked Mr O’Sullivan why his client had the knife on him, he replied that Mr Reddy had not been in the correct frame of mind, that he was “paranoid” and that it was “all in his head”.

The judge said that 61-year-old Mr Reddy could have used it on a third party and could have “destroyed lives”.

She then sentenced him to six months’ imprisonment. Recognisances were fixed in the event of an appeal.
