A SEMI-professional soccer player was fined €120 after admitting he had no insurance when his car was stopped on Dublin Road, Carlow town Lord Amponsa Afrifa (25) of Brotherton, Graiguecullen, Carlow appeared before Judge Geraldine Carthy at Carlow District Court charged with having no insurance, to which he pleaded guilty.
The court heard that on 7 March at around 4pm on Dublin Road, gardaí on patrol stopped a black BMW that had been flagged on the system as having no insurance. The driver allegedly gave his details to gardaí as ‘Lord of Africa’. A lawful demand was made for him to produce valid insurance, but he failed to do so.
The defendant has no previous convictions.
In mitigation, solicitor Alex Rafter said his client, a semi-professional soccer player with CK United FC in Kilkenny, had sustained an injury a month earlier and, while dealing with this, had forgotten to renew his insurance.
Mr Rafter added that his client has held a full driving licence for the past three years, is currently studying for a degree in micropharmacology and holds an internship with MSD Carlow.
Judge Carthy declined to impose a disqualification, convicting the defendant and fining him €300.
