A NIGERIAN national was last week served with a book of evidence at Carlow District Court in connection with a fatal car crash that occurred outside Tullow last year.

Abayomi Okanlawson (32) had been charged with one count of dangerous driving causing death after being involved in a head-on collision in which another motorist died at Rath East, outside Tullow, on 24 October 2025.

At Carlow District Court on Wednesday 18 February, the defendant was served a book of evidence, with the director of public prosecutions ordering that the case proceed to Wicklow Circuit Court.

Mr Okanlawson is currently on a High Court bail and appeared in court with the assistance of a translator.

Solicitor Chris Hogan asked Judge Fiona Brennan to grant legal aid for a second junior counsel, considering the seriousness of the matter, which she agreed to.

A previous court sitting heard that at the time of the collision, Mr Okanlawson was driving a BMW that collided head-on with a Seat Altea travelling in the opposite direction. The driver of the Seat Altea was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other passenger, his wife, sustained non-life-threatening injuries. Mr Okanlawson was knocked unconscious by the crash and was admitted to hospital for his injuries.

Judge Brennan ordered Mr Okanlawson to appear before the next sitting of Wicklow Circuit Court and adjourned the matter until then.
