Grew cannabis at home for medicinal reasons

Carlow Courthouse

A MAN who grew cannabis plants for medicinal reasons was convicted and fined last week when he appeared before Carlow District Court. Richard Curran, Hill View, Stratford-on-Slaney, Co Wicklow pleaded guilty to cultivating cannabis plants and possessing cannabis at that address on 20 September 2023.

Sergeant Hud Kelly told the court that gardaí searched Mr Curran’s premises and found cannabis plants in a glasshouse, while cannabis worth a total of €180 was found elsewhere.

Solicitor Joe Farrell said that 46-year-old Mr Curran had chronic health issues and had self-medicated with cannabis. However, Mr Farrell continued that in the course of buying the drug Mr Curran “came into contact with people he wasn’t comfortable with” and so therefore decided to grow it himself.

Mr Farrell said that “it wasn’t a big operation” and that his client had very good family support.

Judge Carthy then fined Mr Curran €750 on the cultivation charge and a further €150 for possessing the cannabis.
