A Graiguecullen man who pleaded guilty to an offence of careless driving was spared a disqualification but fined €1,000 when he appeared before Carlow District Court last week.

Jonathan Hurley, 6 '98 Street, Graiguecullen pleaded not guilty to a charge of dangerous driving but admitted to a lesser charge of careless driving.

The offence arose from a two-car accident that occurred at Leagh, Ballon on 30 June 2023.

Inspector Elaine Dalton told Judge Geraldine Carthy that there was a collision between two vehicles on the N80 Ballon to Carlow road and that although both cars were written off, there were no major injuries.

Solicitor Joe Farrell told the judge that 27-year-old Mr Hurley had “a very good job” and that “his employer is a man I’d trust and that man trusts Mr Hurley”.

He continued that he was driving a company car at the time and that the company is “standing by him”.

The court heard that the defendant had no previous convictions and that it would be very unlikely for Mr Hurley to be back before the court again.

Judge Carthy said she took those mitigating facts into consideration and declined to ban Mr Hurley from driving. She did, however, impose a €1,000 fine.
