Four months jail for third no insurance offence

Car was seized by gardaí on the day
A GRAIGUECULLEN motorist was last week jailed for four months at Carlow District Court after he was caught driving without insurance for the third time.
Tommy Kerrigan, 48 Ferrybank Apartments, Graiguecullen was sentenced for driving without insurance and failing to produce the relevant documentation after he was stopped by gardaí on the N80 at Ballinacarney, Carlow on 10 July last year.
Sgt Hud Kelly told Judge Geraldine Carthy that Mr Kerrigan’s car was seized by gardaí on the day and that he had seven previous convictions, including two for not having insurance cover, as well as a conviction for dangerous driving.
Solicitor Kellie Manning said that her client knew he was “at risk” and apologised to the court.
Judge Carthy said that the case reached the threshold for a custodial sentence and then sentenced Mr Kerrigan (29) to four months’ imprisonment while also disqualifying him from driving for six years. Recognisances were fixed in the event of an appeal.
