Carlow teenager admits having cannabis for sale

A teenager from Carlow who admitted having €750 worth of cannabis for sale or supply was given a suspended sentence when he appeared before the local district court last week.

Jake O’Callaghan, Oakley Park, Carlow pleaded guilty to having the cannabis after gardaí searched that property on 28 June 2023 and found €750 worth of cannabis and a weighing scales.

Defending solicitor Chris Hogan told Judge Geraldine Carthy that Mr O’Callaghan fully co-operated with the gardaí and pleaded guilty at an early date.

He continued that his client was only 18 years' old at the time of the offence and that he had difficulties with cannabis use.

He added that Mr O’Callaghan had bought the drug at a good price and had sold it to some of his friends.

Mr Hogan also said that the defendant was now working as an apprentice and was doing well.

Judge Carthy heard that Mr O’Callaghan had two previous convictions, but not for sale or supply.

She said that she must take into consideration the effect that drugs have on society.

She then sentenced Mr O'Callaghan to six months' imprisonment, suspending it for 24 months.
