A DEFENDANT who was given a chance by Judge Geraldine Carthy to prove that he could stay out of trouble was back before her at last week’s sitting of Carlow District Court, where he was sentenced to 16 months in prison.
Paul Lyons, St Paul’s, Castlehill, Carlow pleaded guilty to four counts of thefts. He had pleaded guilty in a court sitting earlier this year to taking property worth €100 from Petmania and €96 worth of property from Woodies, both in Hanover, Carlow on 23 March this year.
Judge Carthy adjourned sentencing Mr Lyons (31) to give him a chance to prove that he would not reoffend. However, Mr Lyons was back before her last week on two more recent theft charges dated 22 June 2024. They were the theft of a mobile phone from Paddy Power’s betting office on Tullow Street, Carlow and €72 worth of items from Tesco, Fairgreen Shopping Centre, Carlow.
Solicitor Joe Farrell told Judge Carthy that he had made inquiries about getting the mobile phone back but he wasn’t successful. He also noted that she had given Mr Lyons “an opportunity but this wasn’t availed of”. Judge Carthy sentenced the defendant, who is already in custody for the offences, to two eight-months sentences.
