A THIRTY-five-year-old man who stole a pair of sunglasses from an optician’s in Carlow town has been sentenced to six months in prison. Robert Brennan, New Gardens, Athy Road, Carlow appeared before Judge Geraldine Carthy at Carlow District Court via video link on a summons alleging theft on 4 February 2025 from Sarah Young Opticians on Tullow Street.
The court heard that gardaí received a report of a male entering the opticians, placing the sunglasses in his pocket and leaving without making an attempt to pay. Gardaí viewed CCTV footage and identified the suspect as Mr Brennan. A summons was issued and the property was not recovered.
Mr Brennan has 113 previous convictions. The latest was before Carlow District Court on 4 February for a section 4 theft offence. He has also been convicted of possession of drugs, for which he was imprisoned for one month.
“The court would be familiar with Mr Brennan,” conceded his solicitor Joe Farrell, who added that his client had family support and that his mother was present in court.
“He has entered a guilty plea – it is relatively recent,” the solicitor said in mitigation, asking the court to consider it as a lower-level offence.
The court heard that Mr Brennan is currently in prison with a release date of 24 February, with other matters ongoing.
Judge Carthy noted the aggravating factors and convicted and sentenced Mr Brennan to six months in prison.
