Carlow man pleads guilty to possessing explicit images

A 36-YEAR-old man pleaded guilty to possession and distribution of child sexual abuse material at a recent sitting of Carlow Circuit Court before Judge Eugene O’Kelly. Padraig Fahy, 6A Academy Court, Carlow pleaded guilty to one count of possession of child sexual abuse images contrary to section 6(1) of the Child Trafficking and Pornography Act, 1998. The court heard that on 10 January 2020, Mr Fahy knowingly possessed 30 images on a Razor mobile phone, 14 on a Huawei mobile phone and 2,241 images on a Raidmax PC.

The defendant further pleaded guilty to the offence of distributing child sexually explicit material under section 5(1)(b) of the 1998 Act, such that on 26 August 2018 at his home address he emailed explicit images on four separate occasions.

Regarding sentencing for the offence, defence barrister Eamonn O’Moore asked the court for time to prepare a psychiatric report, describing the offending as having a “slightly unusual background”.

Judge O’Kelly granted legal aid to extend to the cost of preparing a psychological report and put the matter back to the circuit court sitting on 14 July for an update on the preparation of the report.
