Carlow driver thought insurance was transferrable

A man who thought that his insurance cover was transferrable when he bought a new car and was subsequently summoned for driving without insurance was last week spared a disqualification when he appeared before Carlow District Court.
Patrick Anthony McCarthy, 45 The Laurels, Tullow Road, Carlow, was summoned for driving without insurance or a driver’s licence at Ballincarrig, Carlow, on 10 October 2023.
Inspector Elaine Dalton told Judge Geraldine Carthy that the gardaí spoke to Mr McCarthy there and that he was supposed to produce his documents at a local garda station but didn’t.
Solicitor Joe Farrell said that Mr McCarthy had just bought the car and believed that the insurance he had on his previous car would cover him to drive.
Judge Carthy fined him €350 but spared him a disqualification.
