Carlow defendant drove six times over legal alcohol limit

A MAN who drove six times over the legal alcohol limit in September last year was fined €350 and disqualified from driving for three years at a recent Carlow District Court hearing.
Kenneth Kane (47) Ballinakill, Garryhill, Co Carlow entered a guilty plea after he was arrested on suspicion of drink-driving on 30 September 2025 after gardaí arrived at the scene of a minor road traffic collision at Abbey Street, Tullow at 1.25pm.
Inspector Conor Nolan said Mr Kane’s alcohol level in his blood read 327mg/100ml blood, making him more than six times over the legal limit. He said Mr Kane has one previous conviction for drink-driving dating back to July 2008 at New Ross District Court.
The defendant was “very apologetic and contrite,” said his solicitor Joe Farrell, noting the charge “has been keeping him awake at night”.
Mr Kane had a good work history and managed to stay off alcohol for a significant period after the 2008 offence and had all the necessary documentation on the vehicle, pointed out Mr Farrell. His client was “very embarrassed” by his actions, he added.
Judge Geraldine Carthy convicted the defendant, fining him €350 and imposing the mandatory disqualification period of three years.
