€300 not enough to avoid drugs conviction

Carlow Courthouse
A RATHVILLY man was last week convicted and fined for possessing cocaine and cannabis when he appeared before Carlow District Court.
Cole Faulkner (24), Knockroe, Rathvilly pleaded guilty to possessing a quantity of cocaine and €10 worth of cannabis when gardaí searched his house on 25 September last year.
Solicitor Kellie Manning told Judge Geraldine Carthy that Mr Faulkner has “changed his life” since then, that he was associating with the “wrong people” at the time but that he’s now living in Switzerland as a qualified electrician. She continued that he hoped to avoid a conviction as he has a job opportunity in Madrid and that he had €300 in court to offer as a donation to the court poor box.
Judge Carthy noted that cocaine was a class A drug and that €300 wouldn’t be a sufficient donation. She then convicted him of both offences, fining him €300 for the cocaine charge and a further €150 for the cannabis possession.
Recognisances were fixed in the event of an appeal.
