A HUGE congratulations to the sixth-year agricultural science students from St Leo’s College, Carlow, who sold their heifer at Leinster Mart last week – all in the name of charity!
This inspiring initiative was made possible through the incredible generosity and support of two local families. John Mahon, father of student Clodagh Mahon, kindly donated the heifer as a calf to the agricultural science class. Since then, Barry Nolan, father of student Sophia Nolan, has looked after the heifer, nicknamed ‘Winnie the Moo’, over the past two years on behalf of the girls.
The girls, along with their ag science teacher Ms Comerford, have being following Winnie’s progress and were proud to see their efforts pay off. The heifer’s weight was 410kg and she made €2,000 at the sale. Great interest was shown in the sale of the cow and in the end she was bought by local farmer, Jimmy Walsh.
Even more heartwarming, all proceeds from the sale will be donated to a variety of local charities in Carlow, making this a truly community-centred project.
Well done to the students, their teacher and the families involved for showing such generosity, teamwork and community spirit!
