A CIVIC reception will be held to honour the county’s All-Ireland heroes. At last week’s meeting of Carlow County Council, members agreed to host a civic reception for the victorious Bennekerry Tinryland team, winners of the All-Ireland Club Intermediate Championship.

Cathaoirleach cllr Fergal Browne congratulated the team, not just on their All-Ireland win but their hard work throughout the championship and the excellent football they played all the way to the final.

“They are a credit to themselves and their families,” he said.

Cllr Jim Deane on behalf of the team thanked the council for the welcome home reception at the Town Hall on the evening of the final. “It was a fantastic reception for a fantastic team,” he said.

Cllr Andrea Dalton spoke of the “phenomenal football” Bennekerry Tinryland ladies played all season and proposed the hosting of a civic reception, seconded by cllr Paul Doogue and supported by all members.

Cllr Browne stated that a date for the civic reception would be arranged with the agreement of the club. He also added his congratulations to Padraig Webb, winner of the men’s event at the recent Carlow Cross-Country Championships in Tinryland, brother of Bennekerry Tinryland player Aoibhin Webb, who was second in the ladies race, and St Laurence O’Toole Athletic Club, winners of the team event.

Cllr Willie Quinn also complimented Margaret Byrne from Mount Leinster Rangers, who was recently awarded a national Croke Park Award in recognition of her work with the club.
