Castledermot athlete set to compete in Paris Paralympics

Aaron Shorten
CASTLEDERMOT is wishing a local athlete the very best of luck as he prepares to put all of his hard work to the test at the upcoming Paris 2024 Paralympic Games.
Posters and tricolour bunting have gone up around the town in support of Aaron Shorten (21), who is a member of St Laurence O’Toole Athletic Club in Carlow. His coach is Feidhlim Kelly.
Aaron came through the Athletics Ireland Juvenile system to Senior, having won ten All Ireland National titles at Juvenile level. He made his International debut at the 2023 Para Athletics World Championships in Paris where he ran in his preferred event, the 1500m (T20).
Paris will be his first Paralympic Games – the event will take place in the French capital between 28 August and 8 September.
Castle Villa AFC is among those who have sent messages of encouragement Aaron’s way.
“The entire Castle Villa AFC family is incredibly proud of your hard work and dedication,” the club said on social media. “We’re all behind you, cheering you on every step of the way! Bring home the gold, Aaron!” Earlier this month, Aaron took time out of his busy schedule to come into St Laurence O’Toole AC ahead of his Paralympics debut.
“Aaron was accompanied by his biggest and proudest supporters and rightfully so, his parents Ken and Deborah and younger brother Callum who have been with him every step of the way,” the club said. “Our Chairman Billy Delaney was there to acknowledge Aaron for his outstanding achievement on his recent selection on the Irish Para Athletics Team. Aaron will head to Portugal to continue with his training before making his debut in Paris where he will compete in the 1500m. Huge congratulations Aaron and the very best of luck, everyone here in the club will be rooting for you.”
